If you have kids, especially young ones, you know that they can get into just about anything. If you’re expecting your first child, you are probably worried about exactly that. Either way, the big problem is how to kid-proof your kitchen and still make it convenient for you to use.
First of all, many people store cleaning supplies under the sink. If you’re going to do that, make sure that you put child-proof locks on those cabinets.
A better option would be to store your cleaning supplies in your overhead cabinets, especially those items that you don’t use much often. Nevertheless, lock these cabinets just to be sure.
Knives are the most worrisome tools in a kitchen. Because of their frequent usage, they have to be kept in a place where you can easily reach them at all times. This can be very unsafe if you have children at home.
If you have children who are beginning to reach for the top of the counters, you need to store those sharp objects in a cabinet higher than the counter. Alternatively, you can also store them in cabinet that is secured with a childproof lock.
As your child gets old enough to understand, show them the dangers of the kitchen. Explain that they aren’t allowed to do things, yes, but also explain why. Kids don’t like being told what to do, especially with no explanation. If you tell them that knives or hot stoves are dangerous and even demonstrate that to them, they’ll be less likely to try to use those things without your supervision.
That brings me to the last point. Don’t ban your kids from the kitchen entirely, especially if they’re school-aged. Little kids always want to do things that they aren’t allowed to do.
Alternatively, it is always better to create projects that you and your children can enjoy together. For instance, baking cakes and cookies are always a child’s favorite. Involving them in such activities keeps them engaged and under your supervision as well.
